KIPP Academy is a free open enrollment college-preparatory public school where students develop the knowledge, skills, and character needed to succeed in top quality high schools, colleges, and the competitive world beyond. Some features of KIPP Academy’s academic program include:
- On average 67% more time spent in school: Students attend KIPP Academy from 7:25 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, for four hours on Saturdays, and three weeks during the summer. In spite of the long hours, average daily attendance is 98%.
- Two hours of homework each night. Teachers are available on cell phone for assistance.
- Academically-oriented experiential field lessons to national parks, historically significant regions, and college campuses.
- A comprehensive and on-going staff development program designed to assist teachers in implementing effective lessons utilizing a variety of activities to accomplish clearly defined aims while simultaneously taking different learning styles into account.
- Constant communication with parents about how they can support the school's efforts at home.
- 90-minute blocks for reading and math classes.
- Staffing two KIPP Social Workers who meet with the most at-risk students on a daily basis and with all KIPP students on a regular basis to help them address personal issues.
- Weekly tests and quizzes designed to monitor students' progress and identify areas of weakness.
